As we get older, and sometimes during pregnancy, changes of our facial skin occur that make us look older. The goal of any facial rejuvenation procedure is to reverse or prevent these changes to give us a more youthful appearing face and skin. There are many processes that cause the “aged” look. These include the formation of wrinkles, development of facial pigmentations, and a loss of volume. If you are concerned about these changes and want to rejuvenate your face and make it look younger, these processes must be addressed.
Laser resurfacing techniques can help improve many of these aging changes. The newest form of these techniques utilizes fractional laser technologies. Essentially the computer controlled laser forms thousands of tiny holes in the skin that allow the new rejuvenated skin to fill in and heal over these holes to result in a rejuvenated effect. These treatments result in less downtime than older technologies and are generally the preferred choice by most patients and physicians. I utilize one of the best type of laser for this procedure called the SmartXide DOT laser.
The CO2 laser is considered the standard for laser resurfacing. Used for years to remove the aging outer layer of the skin to allow the inner skin tissue to regenerate, it successfully helps form newer, smoother and more youthful appearing skin. It effectively stimulates new collagen growth in the deeper skin layer, improves the damage caused by the sun, plumps the skin, removes unwanted pigmentations, smooths wrinkles, improves acne scars, and tightens the skin. Thus, essentially almost all the changes of aging can be treated with this amazing new laser technology.
The best part of this story is that all this can occur with minimal down time. The fractional CO2 technique can allow you to go back to normal work and activities within a few days to a week. This is about a third of the healing time required with older traditional laser resurfacing.
The procedure is performed in the office with only local analgesics with mild sedation as needed. It takes only around an hour to do the whole process. Numbing cream and/or regional blocks can be utilized to make the procedure very comfortable and painless. Afterwards, most patients complain of just mild discomfort treated with pain medications.
Laser resurfacing can be combined with other facial rejuvenating techniques to give you even the best results with the least downtime. Botox can help eliminate wrinkles that form in the upper face and around the eyes from muscle contractions. Facial fillers, such as Restylane, Juvaderm and Radiesse, can replenish the volume that is lost as you get older. IPL Photofacial treatments can fade and decrease the age-spots and sun spots to enhance the effect of the CO2 laser on these changes. Combining these options can enhance the results of laser resurfacing to rejuvenate your face even more.
Non surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures are improving every day. These minimal downtime procedures are replacing the need to perform plastic and reconstructive surgery on the face. Plastic surgery is becoming non-surgical. I have always and will continue to practice on the cutting edge of new facial rejuvenation techniques.
